Welcome to the website of the 13th conference of the International Association for Dialogue Analysis. This international conference is scheduled every other year and will be, for the first time in the history of the association, taking place in North America. More precisely, we invite you in Montreal, Canada’s multilingual metropolis in the mostly French-speaking province of Québec. We hope that anybody who has devoted energy in research and/or teaching in and about interaction, dialogue, and representation will be interested in joining us for this exceptional event, which will forcibly gather people from all around the world.
As you will notice, the title of the conference is Dialogue and Representation and we, of course, welcome any contribution that relates to this very broad theme (see the Call for Papers for more information). Importantly, we also welcome any contribution that, more widely, is related to the study of dialogue, whether from a scientific or philosophical viewpoint, and from all the disciplines that have an interest in these research topics: linguistics, communication, ethics, pragmatics, social sciences, etc.
As mentioned on the IADA website, “The notion of dialogue is not restricted to a specific view of dialogue nor to a particular model but covers the whole range of language use including approaches based on other concepts such as conversation, discourse or social interaction. The following premises are considered to be common ground, even though they might also be discussed: (1) Language is primarily used for communication, (2) Communication is always dialogic.” Based on this inclusive acceptation of the notion of dialogue, we hope that many scholars and students will be interested in participating in this unique conference.
Montreal has a lot to offer and we hope that you will take advantage of this conference to visit this vibrant city and discover its great restaurants, museums, festivals, concerts, and theaters. Montreal is often depicted as a nice combination of European and American flavors and lifestyles. So we hope that beyond your participation in this conference, you will also take the time to enjoy the Montreal beat and joie de vivre.
See you soon!
